Zerina Akers Turns Black Owned Everything Into an Online Shopping Destination

At the height of the pandemic—and the racial tension that swept the nation in the summer of 2020—there was a need to highlight more Black excellence beyond moments of trauma in the community. While Sharon Chuter was calling for transparency and accountability in companies, Zerina Akers—stylist to stars like Beyoncé and sister duo Chloe x Halle—launched the Instagram account Black Owned Everything that spotlighted Black businesses, from fashion to home goods to food, to fanfare. From there, Akers knew her next step: Turning her popular Instagram account into a one-stop luxury e-commerce site. So she did exactly that.

Launching today, February 12, Black Owned Everything debuts as “a platform that is both a marketplace and media culture hub built on the foundation of inclusivity to amplify and empower a diverse community of creators,” the brand says in a press release.

Black brands and designers deserve more than black squares, hashtags, and reposts companies posted in solidarity with the Black community last summer. At Black Owned Everything, Akers gives them a permanent home.

This home in particular looks like an expansive e-commerce site that houses brands that run the gamut from beauty to fashion, including Fe Noel, Glemaud, Brandon Blackwood NYC, Salone Monet, Skin Butter, and Girl and Hair. In addition to the shoppable site, Akers plans to transform BOE into a cultural hub “through immersive storytelling and activated experiences” that will eventually become a go-to destination for all things Black.
