The Linda Lindas, the Los Angeles teen punk band who went viral this week with their performance of ‘Racist Sexist Boys’, have reportedly landed a record deal with Epitaph Records.
The four-piece – Bela, Lucia, Eloise, and Mila – formed in 2018 and describe themselves as “Half Asian / Half Latinx. Sisters, cousins and friends who play music together because it’s fun!!” Having opened for bands like Best Coast, Money Mark, and the Dils, they were handpicked by Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna to open for them in 2019, which led to them contributing music to Amy Poehler’s Netflix movie Moxie. But it was their performance of ‘Racist Sexist Boys’ at the Los Angeles Public Library on May 4 that garnered millions of views and caught the attention of Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello and Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore.
Talking about the inspiration behind the song, Mila explained during the performance: “A little while before we went into lockdown, a boy came up to me in my class and said that his dad told him to stay away from Chinese people. After I told him that I was Chinese, he backed away from me. Eloise and I wrote this song based on that experience.”
