‘Deathloop’ Earns Two Wins at The Game Awards 2021, But Misses Game of The Year

In a rare surprise twist for The Game Awards this year, the winner of Best Game Direction (which was Bethesda’s Deathloop) did not earn the coveted Game of The Year award. Instead, Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two snuck in for the win. Deathloop didn’t go away empty-handed, however. Of its nine nominations in eight categories, the shooter walked away with awards for Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction.

Capcom scored with Resident Evil Village (another Game of The Year nominee) earning the Best Performance award with Maggie Robertson as Lady Dimitrescu, as well as their revamped classic Resident Evil 4 snagging the Best VR/AR Game. Housemarque earned Best Action Game with Returnal, while Nintendo won the Best Action/Adventure Game award for Metroid Dread.

To no one’s surprise, From Software’s upcoming Elden Ring won Most Anticipated Game for the second year in a row.

Surprisingly, Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2, despite earning five nominations, walked away from the show empty-handed. Turtle Rock Studio’s Back 4 Blood also missed out in the two categories in which it was nominated.
