Margo Price Makes a Poignant Statement With ‘Lydia’ on ‘The Daily Show’

The single comes off the singer’s 2023 LP, Strays

Margo Price appeared on The Daily Show last night to showcase her emotive single “Lydia” and to chat with guest host Sarah Silverman about her music. Price performed the song, a moving track about bodily autonomy and women’s rights, solo with an acoustic guitar.

“Lydia” was written years ago after Price was struck with inspiration while passing by a women’s health clinic on tour. She finally recorded it last year for her most recent album Strays, which dropped in January. Roe v. Wade hadn’t been overturned when “Lydia” was written or recorded — now it feels like an eerily timely prediction.

“The song feels like a premonition now, with women’s rights being stripped and all the abortion bans happening,” Price noted in a statement at the time of release. “When I listen back, I hear what might go through a woman’s mind when she has a difficult decision to make about her body, her choices and her future.”

Price sat down with Silverman, the late-night show’s current host, to talk about Strays, her memoir Maybe We’ll Make It, and what it’s like to be a liberal in the country world. She also described how psychedelic experiences led her to quitting alcohol and writing the LP.

Over the summer, Price announced Strays II, an extension of Strays with nine new songs that arrived in the form of three distinct acts. She also collaborated with Jessi Colter, producing and contributing vocals, guitar, and percussion to her album, Edge of Forever.

In May, Price penned a personal essay for Rolling Stone on gun control following the Covenant shooting. The essay discusses gun violence, Nashville protests, and white privilege.
