Megan Moroney Can’t Avoid Her Ex on New Breakup Ballad ‘No Caller ID’

The Georgia-born singer releases first new music since breakout debut LP Lucky, which landed Number One on Rolling Stone’s 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2023 list

Fresh off landing at Number One on Rolling Stone’s 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2023 list, Megan Moroney is back with her new single “No Caller ID,” the Douglasville, Georgia, singer’s first new music since releasing her debut album Lucky.

For the post-breakup ballad, Moroney reteams with Lucky producer and Sugarland member Kristian Bush, as well as co-writers Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, and Jessie Jo Dillon. Prior to releasing the studio version Friday, Moroney previewed the track live on her tour in support of Lucky.

“I’m two months deep in therapy/Been finally getting sleep/My friends quit checking up on me/’Cause I’m back on my feet,” Moroney sings over acoustic and pedal steel guitars in the aftermath of a breakup.

“I’m doing more than getting by/I’ve been seeing a stand-up guy/It’s the middle of the night/And my phone starts ringing and, here you come again.”

Moroney came almost out of nowhere to land atop the Rolling Stone list, delivering what we called “the most exciting album-length debut Nashville has heard in some time.”

“There was every reason to be skeptical of the rush-ordered debut album from an unknown 25-year-old singer named Megan Moroney,” we wrote, adding that Lucky “packs tearful piano ballads, Shania-inspired pop-romps, and forceful rockers into its 13-song tracklist. Sure, she knows how to do the normal country tropes well: cars and guitars and deceitful exes and claustrophobic Southern hometowns. But the album’s casual, youth-conversant tone makes it shine and comes naturally from a singer whose Gen Z iteration of three chords and the truth involves plenty of SEC football, self-doubt, and social-media scrolling.”
