‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Breaks Another R-Rated Box Office Record On Tuesday, Holds Steady With $24M

Who said theatrical is broken? Who said theatrical doesn’t work? Behold the fact that Marvel Studios and Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine is making another estimated $24M today, essentially even with Monday’s $24.4M. This takes the running domestic total for the Ryan Reynolds-Hugh Jackman R-rated movie to $259.8M.

Deadpool & Wolverine keeps breaking R-rated records, this time topping the $13.9M Tuesday take of 2019’s The Joker.

Among all Tuesdays in July, D&W is sixth behind Spider-Man: Far From Home ($39.2M), The Amazing Spider-Man ($35M), The Lion King ($30.3M), Transformers ($27.8M) and Barbie ($26M). Among all Tuesdays, D&W is currently 15th best.

It’s a great thing to hold even at the daily box office. Barbie did it last year grossing $26M on its first Monday and Tuesday. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home was -15% in its Monday-to-Tuesday, while Avengers: Endgame eased -10% and Avengers: Infinity War was -5% over those two days.

How does weekend 2 for D&W look? The first Deadpool eased -57% in weekend 2 with $56.4M while Deadpool 2 did $43.4M, -65%. Given the momentum of this Shawn Levy-directed title, D&W has to be stronger than those previous chapters, especially since this is a pinnacle moment of the franchise being incorporated into the greater MCU.

The top 5 MCU weekends are as follows: Avengers: Endgame ($147.3M, -59%), Avengers: Infinity War ($114.7M, -56%), Black Panther ($111.6M, -45%), The Avengers ($103M, -50%) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($84.5M, -68%). Don’t be surprised if D&W break their way into that batch.
