Kacey Musgraves Did Not ‘Scowl’ at Beyoncé’s Grammy Win: A ‘False Narrative’

A rep for the country star called the unfounded internet accusation “sensationalistic”

Kacey Musgraves wasn’t making a face or reacting negatively to Beyoncé‘s win for Best Country Album at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. After fans misinterpreted a clip of Musgraves clapping for Beyoncé’s win, a rep for Musgraves set the record straight on Tuesday.

“It’s a sensationalistic false narrative meant to pit two talented female artists against each other,” a rep told E! News about the accusation. “There was simply no scowl or expression made.”

The rep’s comment comes after fans seemed to overanalyze a clip of Lainey Wilson and Musgraves — who were both nominated in the Best Country Album category — clapping for Beyoncé as she took the stage to accept the award from Taylor Swift. Musgraves and Wilson can be seen smiling in the clip as Beyoncé takes the stage.

Kacey Musgraves isn’t here for Beyoncé’s rodeo.😳 The “Deeper Well” singer’s reaction to Bey, 43, winning Best Country Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards went viral on social media for all the wrong reasons.

Musgraves and Beyoncé even snapped a photo at the previous year’s Grammys. And in fact, Musgraves said “the more the fucking merrier” about artists entering the space in music in an interview with The Cut last March. Cowboy Carter songwriter INK also revealed in April 2024 that she “actually met” with Musgraves when working on the album.

“She sent us down there because we were making country music, we wanted to bring that spirit…Kacey was amazing. We made five songs in one day,” INK said, adding that Musgraves may appear on her own project.

Overall, the Grammys were a big celebration for women in country music. Musgraves won Best Country Song for co-writing her Deeper Well standout “The Architect” with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne while Beyoncé took home Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “II Most Wanted” with Miley Cyrus and the Country Album and Album of the Year trophies for Cowboy Carter. Sierra Ferrell also shined after cleaning up in the Americana categories thanks to her album Trail of Flowers.
