For this exhibition Christoph decided to present Azzedine Alaia’s 1992 collection as it was an important year for Azzedine Alaia and his designer creations.

When Azzadine Alaia discovered that Madame de Pompadour grew up in France he was very delighted because he always loved stories about Palace Versaille. In 1992 he paid her a tribute in his very own way with delicate laces, tiny waisted dresses and layers of ruffles. There are also examples of Azzedine Alaia’s native country Tunisia influences with black and white stripes and Arabic detailed edges. There are belts that are also inspired by Arabic patterns.

Many people have since followed in his steps with the styling, however for Azzedine Alaia all these details have a special meaning because it is where he is from. There are dresses that really represent Azzedine Alaia’s work, such as strapless dresses with inlays which revealed the skin that were very important to him. On display there is an iconic dress designed for Grace Jones which she wore in the James Bond film. Azzadine Alaia worked with molded strips of fabric and played with the transparency of skin, as he loved to emphasize the body with this technique, which has since become his signature.

More than 20 years later all of these dresses, suits and jackets are timeless and they can still be worn today.
