Author Grady Hendrix released his second novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism back in 2016, which he describes as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” Set in the late ’80s during the so-called Satanic Panic, it’s a touching story of high school friendship and, well, demonic possession. THR reports today that a movie adaptation is now in the works from Endeavor Content.
Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade) will star alongside Amiah Miller, Cathy Ang, and Rachel Ogechi Kanu. Production is already underway, with Damon Thomas (“Penny Dreadful”) directing.
Fisher had recently starred in the second season of Hulu’s now-cancelled series “Castle Rock,” and she’ll next be seen in the Fede Alvarez-produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel.
“Set in 1988, the novel centered on the relationship between Abby (Fisher) and Gretchen (Miller), two best friends and sophomores in high school. Their friendship is tested when an evening of skinny-dipping goes wrong, and Gretchen begins to act differently and followed by bizarre occurrences. After some investigating, Abby begins to horrifyingly suspect that her friend may be possessed by a demon force.”
Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) is one of the film’s producers.
