Bigfoot: it may not be just an unknown ape, as you’re about to find. Here are five freaky stories about the creatures: (1) There’s the matter of the language of the creatures: A number of recordings have been made of what are purported to be the vocalizations of Bigfoot. While some have been explained away as known animals, there is one set of recording that, more than any other, really stand the test of time. They have become known as the Sierra Sounds. The story of the Sierra Sounds dates back to the 1970s, and is focused around two Bigfoot investigators, Ron Morehead and Alan Berry. From the early to mid-1970s, the two men captured astonishing audio recordings of what many believe to have been Bigfoot creatures – in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California – demonstrating a form of language. (2) The website Native Languages notes: “The Bigfoot figure is common to the folklore of most Northwest Native American tribes. Native American Bigfoot legends usually describe the creatures as around 6-9 feet tall, very strong, hairy, uncivilized, and often foul-smelling, usually living in the woods and often foraging at night…In some Native stories, Bigfoot may have minor supernatural powers – the ability to turn invisible, for example – but they are always considered physical creatures of the forest, not spirits or ghosts.”
(3) There are far more than a few reports on record where witnesses in close proximity to Bigfoot have reported feeling inexplicably terrified, nauseous, confused, disoriented, dizzy, light-headed, and physically unable to move. This may not be due to sheer terror and the pounding flood of massive amounts of adrenalin coursing through the bloodstream. The culprit may be something called infrasound. In simple terms, infrasound is an extremely low frequency sound, one which is significantly lower than 20HZ, which is the typical extreme of human hearing. Sasquatch expert Scott Carpenter said of his very own encounter with a Bigfoot: “I am not an acoustic expert or a scientist. My findings are based on observation and common sense. I think that I was under the influence of infrasound during my encounter with the Bigfoot on April 30th , 2010. The Bigfoot manipulated my perception and sanitized my memory. Even more disturbing was the fact that I did not react to observing the Bigfoot. I had to have initially recognized what it was and where it was hiding. I made two attempts to zoom in on the Bigfoot and get a close up video. Sometime during this process I was subjected to the influence of infrasound and strongly influenced or ‘brain washed’ into walking off. It is almost like my memory was wiped clean and I was given instructions to leave and I did.”
(4) Beyond any shadow of doubt, one of the strangest claims made about Bigfoot is that the creatures have a particularly liking for braiding the manes of horses! While it’s a scenario that, at first glance, sounds manifestly absurd, the fact is that throughout recorded history there are stories of strange creatures with a fascination for horse-braiding, with Bigfoot and its mysterious ilk leading the pack. Certainly, the leading expert in this curious field is Lisa Shiel, the author of Backyard Bigfoot and Forbidden Bigfoot. Shiel, whose books chronicle her very own encounters with Bigfoot, says: “I first encountered the main braiding phenomenon while living in Texas. In the beginning, I allowed myself to dismiss them as natural tangles or perhaps the handiwork of the neighbors’ children. As time went on, however, I found it more and more difficult to stick to my original hypothesis.” Indeed, in the 2000s, and particularly 2005, Shiel experienced numerous examples of horse-braiding when Bigfoot activity in her vicinity was at its height.
(5) A particularly strange story that falls perfectly into this category of “Bigfoot weirdness” reached my attention in mid-March 2007 and occurred only a week or so earlier. It came from a married couple, Donnie and Lynne, who lived on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. It all began, I was told, in the heart of the Ouachita National Forest, Oklahoma. Certainly, it’s a forest that could easily hide far more than a few Bigfoot. It was around dusk and husband and wife were strolling along the winding paths of the tree-shrouded Ouachita National Recreation Trail when Donnie was suddenly gripped by an overwhelming sense that they were not alone, that their every move was being watched and scrutinized by animalistic eyes. Donnie’s sixth-sense – one that we have all displayed from time to time – was right on target. In seconds, a massive, hair-covered figure emerged from the trees, at a distance of what was barely twenty feet or so.
Perhaps not surprisingly, seeing the thing at close quarters caused Lynne to fall to the ground, her legs giving way beneath her. Donnie could only stare, with a mixture of awe, fear, and dread. For a moment the Bigfoot merely stared at them, and then something totally unforeseen occurred: Bigfoot spoke to the shocked couple. Not literally, but in a fashion that they could only describe as telepathy. Both Donnie and Lynne heard the following words fill their heads, but in a soothing, soft, female voice: “Do not be afraid. You will not be harmed. Do not come close.” Hardly surprisingly, the pair did exactly what they were told to do. For a few moments, at least.
Donnie decided after twenty seconds or so that this was a once in a lifetime chance to capture evidence of the creatures that science and zoology tell us do not exist. He slowly reached into his backpack and pulled out his digital camera. In a second, the voice filled his head again, although not that of Lynne, interestingly: “Do not.” It was as if, Donnie suggested to me, that the creature understood perfectly what a camera was and what it could do, and, therefore, instantly took steps to prevent the pair from securing evidence of the beast’s existence. Fortunately, there was no violent attack on them. Instead the Bigfoot leaned in close and, yet again, they heard a female voice say: “You will not be hurt and you need not fear.” They didn’t need telling again and managed to scramble to their shaking legs and backed away, finally breaking into a hysterical run, looking back until the creature could no longer be seen.
