Aliens are in the air (maybe). If you’re like us, you’ve been wondering a bit more about what exists beyond our solar system ever since the government released an unclassified report that seriously discussed extraterrestrial life for the first time in our nation’s history. Lifeforms on other planets have always been a fascination among Americans, given the secrecy around Area 51 and scattered civilian reports of UFO sightings throughout history. It’s natural to look up and wonder what else is out there, but it becomes even more pressing when “out there” becomes right here on earth. Nearly 120 incidents of UFO sightings have been recorded over the past two decades by U.S Navy pilots, and the documents released by the Director of National Intelligence shed some light, albeit not a lot, on what they might be.

In recent years, newly unclassified videos of unidentified aerial phenomena — aka UAPs, the government’s official designation for UFOs  — have gone viral. The videos show unidentified vessels that seem to defy the known laws of aerodynamics, and the footage has baffled civilian and government experts alike. The long-awaited government report on the UFO sightings has finally been released, but it didn’t answer many questions.

Essentially, the reports didn’t confirm alien presence on earth, but they didn’t deny it either. While they confirmed the flying objects weren’t “from any American military or U.S government-affiliated operation,” they also didn’t conclusively say they were from another planet either. The ambiguity of the findings means that the government can neither confirm nor deny that these objects are proof of extraterrestrial life visiting earth.

So, naturally, we’re preparing for a full alien invasion, and we think you should too.

How Do You Prepare For An Alien Invasion?

We’re not entirely sure what an alien invasion would look like, so we’re going to prepare like we would any other zombie apocalypse or extreme natural disaster, where vital resources are in short supply. This includes buying things like emergency kits, emergency radios (you know, in case the aliens knock out our cell phone towers or satellites), survival knives and other reassuring gear.

It also could mean a tactical vests and tactical backpacks if we’re battling the aliens. You may also want to invest in books about aliens and extraterrestrial life so we can learn more about earth’s new inhabitants, and potentially build lifelong bonds. We’re going to prepare for any scenario.

When planning for an alien invasion, you want to think in terms of basic human needs: food, water, shelter and communication. Also, think about what aspects of society might break down in the event of a world-changing event like first contact — transportation, electrical grid, healthcare, etc. At a minimum, you would want the following emergency supplies on hand in the event of an interplanetary war:

  • Emergency Kits: Survival kits provide a convenient, all-in-one solution for the inexperienced prepper. While these kits might seem amateurish to dedicated doomsday preppers, they’re a great option for the average civilian looking to prepare for emergencies.
  • Water Purification: If the aliens prove to be hostile and knock out our national infrastructure, then clean drinking water is going to be priority number one. It’s always a good idea to have emergency drinking water supplies on hand, but water purification tablets or portable water filters are also great options for long-term survival.
  • Food rations: Companies like Readywise provide emergency food supplies that can last you and your family for weeks. Most emergency food kits contain dehydrated military-style MRE packages (meal, ready-to-eat).
  • Communication: Most of us are completely dependent on our cell phones and the internet for information and communication. But what if the cell phone towers and the internet become inoperable? In the event of an alien invasion, a portable radio can be used to listen to emergency broadcasts and learn about evacuation plans.
  • Self-Defense Weapons: We’re going to be honest — if aliens are sophisticated enough to travel between the stars, we probably won’t stand much of a chance in a fight. We can’t advise you on the best firearms or weapons to use when fighting alien invaders, but we have included some basic survival knives and tactical gear in our guide below.
  • Power: Do you have a means of generating your own power in a blackout? If the electricity grid goes down, a generator can help you keep small electronics and appliances running.
  • First Aid: Do you have any vital medications on hand in case you can’t visit the pharmacy or local hospital? Make sure your first aid kit is stocked with common over-the-counter medications.

Here are our gear recommendations for an alien invasion — for defense against, communication with and perhaps even friendship with extraterrestrial life.

Ontario Knife Company 499 Air Force Survival Knife

A good survival knife is always a good idea, especially in an invasion scenario. You might not be able to kill an alien with this, but hopefully it’ll be intimidating enough that they won’t mess with you. It’s made with a 1095 carbon steel blade and has sawteeth on the spine for an easier cut. It also comes with a sharpening stone so you’re always ready for action.

YAKEDA Outdoor Tactical Vest

We don’t want it to come to this, but if we have to defend ourselves against aliens a tactical vest might be helpful. They’re made to hold all sorts of important tools, weapons and necessary items in the event of everything from mountaineering to a shooting range and even combat training. Of course this vest isn’t the caliber that actual armed forces wear, but it’s enough for the average citizen to show up prepared to an alien battle. It also comes in a bunch of cool colors.

Jackery 240 Explorer Portable Power Station

We love Jackery power stations here, and have hand-tested a few of them. They’re great, and would be excellent for an alien invasion scenario where the power grid is overwhelmed by their foreign, more powerful technology. This one is equipped with a 240W lithium-ion battery pack and weighs only 6.6 pounds, so you can throw it in the back of your car and survive out in the woods. It’s made to charge via the sun with solar panels, and comes with an AC outlet as well as two USB-A ports for charging phones.

LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1 Camping Lantern and Phone Charger

If power grids are shut off, you’ll definitely want a way to generate your own power. The Jackery works well, but it’s a tad pricey. If there’s a budget for your alien invasion kit, this generator from LuminAID is solar-powered and contains a 2000mAH battery that can easily recharge your smartphone, tablet or other potentially life-saving electronics. It also acts as a lantern, giving your camp light at night. The battery can last for up to 50 hours on the low light setting on a single charge, and recharges in about 12-14 hours of sunlight. It’s lightweight and compact, waterproof, shatterproof and built durable.

Midland Emergency Crank AM/FM Radio

If we’ve learned one thing from sci-fi alien movies, it’s that they communicate via radio airwaves. An emergency crank radio is useful in a natural disaster in general, but this baby might be able to pick up their transmissions to earth, giving you a potential opportunity to tell them to chill. It comes built with three potential, sustainable power sources including a hand crank, a solar panel and a rechargeable battery. It also has an emergency flashlight and an NOAA weather scan alert function. We’re guessing if there are aliens on earth no one is going to care about an incoming storm, but it’s a useful feature nonetheless.

FosPower 2000mAh Emergency Weather Radio

This is another solid option for an emergency weather radio that comes with three different potential power sources built in. It has a crank as well as a solar panel that can both generate enough power to power the radio, lights and SOS alarm if need be. AAA batteries ensure you’ll have power even if it’s a cloudy day or you don’t have the energy to vigorously crank it. The radio is built to consistently receive broadcasts from NOAA and AM/FM stations and comes with micro-USB charging ports.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter

Another essential element for survival is water, and having a personal water filter is a great idea in an emergency situation where water filtration centers might not be running. This water filter from LifeStraw has a microfiltration membrane inside that removes 99.99999% of waterborne bacteria (including salmonella and E.coli) as well as waterborne parasites like giardia. It also removes things like microplastics. It’s super lightweight and very simple to use.

It’s a good idea to stock up on food for the occasion, and this emergency food supply includes 60 servings of seasoned beef and poultry in individual packets. This pack has a 15-year shelf life, so you’ll be set for a while, and includes 20 bonus servings of rice so you’ve got some quick carbs available as well. UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go on the Record

One of the best ways to prepare for the future is to learn about the past, so reading up on aliens might be a good idea. This New York Times bestseller is a deep investigation into the existence of UFOs and how the government has responded. Leslie Kean, a veteran investigative reporter spent 10 years pouring over accounts of UFO sightings, government documents, radar data, and other unexplainable phenomena and compiled it all into a book with the help of White House chief of staff John Podesta. She reveals decades of U.S government misinformation and presents a bunch of irrefutable evidence that unidentifiable flying objects definitely exist.

Alien Agenda: Investigating the Extraterrestrial Presence Among Us

Award-winning journalist Jim Marrs’ 2000 book is all about evidence of alien life both in UFOs and also presence here on earth. He’s compiled eye witness accounts, classified CIA reports and detailed research into an unraveling of facts that confirm their existence. His information includes details on the 1947 Roswell crash, detailed accounts of UFO landings in South America, Apollo astronaut accounts of UFOs and more. The information is a bit dated nowadays, but provides helpful insight into the timeline of aliens’ interactions with earth, and clues as to when they’ll return.

The Extraterrestrial Species Almanac

Preparing for an invasion means gathering survival supplies, but it also means learning as much about aliens as we possibly can. This is the ultimate guide to alien species including greys, reptilians, hybrids, nordics and more. This book covers the benevolent aliens as well as the ones who could potentially wish us harm, and covers 82 different species in total. ET enthusiast and author Craig Campobasso walks us through the origins, physical characteristics, dimensional capacities, technological capabilities and more of each species, and gives a great overview should an invasion ever occur.
