Ashlee Simpson Revisits “Pieces Of Me” on 20th Anniversary

Ashlee Simpson joins Vevo for a new installment of Footnotes, taking viewers behind the scenes of her debut single and Top 10 charting hit, “Pieces Of Me.” This celebration coincides with the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Autobiography.

During the episode, Ashlee talks about the creation of “Pieces Of Me,” revealing that she and producer John Shanks crafted the catchy guitar riff to create a feel-good song that could connect with everyone. She describes that after going through her first break-up, she was finally in a happy place and wanted to write a positive, feel-good song. She also explains that the music video was intentionally simple to represent her authentic self and her experiences in the studio, highlighting that she created her own music.

Additionally, she talks about the challenge of having to dye her eyebrows after coloring her hair black the night before the shoot. She describes the impromptu styling on set that helped define her mullet era. Lastly, she explains the cameo from Sugar Ray in the music video and that the band’s drummer Stan, a friend of Ashlee’s, helped her get her record deal.
