Jason Isbell Mulls a Prickly Love on New Song ‘Foxes in the Snow’

Track will appear on the musician’s first solo acoustic record of the same name

Jason Isbell has released the title track from his upcoming solo acoustic album, Foxes in the Snow, set to arrive March 7 via his own Southeastern Records.

“Foxes in the Snow” is a prickly kind of love song, with Isbell’s guitar giving off a mysterious, unsettling air, even at its most swooning. “I love my love, her golden hair,” Isbell sings on the second verse, “I like to picture her alone when I’m not there/And I like her friends, the ones I know/And they leave drops of blood like foxes in the snow.”

“Foxes in the Snow” marks Isbell’s second offering from the album, following “Bury Me,” which arrived back in January. The new LP is Isbell’s first solo acoustic collection, and also his first album not to feature any members of his longtime band, the 400 Unit, since his 2007 solo debut, Sirens In the Ditch. (Isbell and the 400 Unit released their most recent album together, Weathervanes, back in 2023.)

Isbell recorded Foxes in the Snow at Electric Lady Studios in New York City last October. The album was made over the course of just five days, with Isbell using a 1940 Martin 0-17 acoustic guitar on all the songs.

Isbell recently completed a short European run and is set to kick off a solo North American run in support of Foxes in the Snow tomorrow, March 15, in Chicago. That trek will wrap March 29 in Atlanta, after which he’ll link back up with the 400 Unit for a an extensive run that starts in April and runs all the way through July.
