Nuzzi Fizzles

I think I would have predicted this one though. Unless you are extremely online or work in media, you don’t know who Olivia Nuzzi is. It’s kinda that simple. It doesn’t help that the book itself is apparently really, really bad. Is there a version of this story that would actually sell a book? Like an investigative journalist really gets into it? I still think no. No one cares. Let’s all move along.

Edelweiss Substantially Hikes Prices

Edelweiss is one of the pipes through which the modern publishing industry flows. As a media person, I use it almost daily to browse catalogs, request review copies, and otherwise keep track of forthcoming books I want to know more about. One thing you can do when you are that important is raise prices. And that Edelweiss has done. Edelweiss was recently acquired, which is often a moment where existing ways of doing things are re-examined. And very rarely does that mean prices stay the same. In some cases, the publisher fees are increasing by almost 300%, which is tough to take even if you really like a service. NetGalley is their only real competitor, and I would be interested to see if there is a chance for them to grab some market share, though they are not exactly 1:1 replacements. Also would be an interesting moment for an upstart to come into what is essentially a database management product.
