‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’ Director Darren Bousman is Still Campaigning to Direct the Next ‘Leprechaun’ Movie

Whether or not he’s even all that serious at this point, Darren Bousman (Saw II-IV, Repo: The Genetic Opera, Spiral: From the Book of Saw) has been publicly asking Lionsgate to let him tackle a new installment in the horror-comedy Leprechaun franchise for over ten years now, taking to Twitter every St. Patrick’s Day to remind them that he still wants to do it.

And, well, today is St. Patrick’s Day, and Bousman has once again tweeted about the dream project. This year, he even managed to get Lionsgate to chime in and have a little fun.

Bousman tweeted this morning, “So, @Lionsgate… if Spiral is a success, can we talk about finally letting me have the Leprechaun franchise and trying a little something something with it? Just saying?! (For the last ten years). Love you.”

Lionsgate replied, “my p̵e̵o̵p̵l̵e̵ leprechauns will call your p̵e̵o̵p̵l̵e̵ leprechauns.”

Bousman had told Entertainment Weekly back in 2014, “I have always loved the Leprechaun franchise. So much so I pleaded desperately to anyone who would listen to let me direct a reboot some years back. There was something so ridiculously fun and silly about them. A lot of people shunned the sequels, but for my money, nothing is better than watching a franchise let its villain go to Vegas, space, the hood, and then back to the hood.” Amen to that.

There have been eight films in the Leprechaun franchise, with 2018’s Leprechaun Returns most recently heading back to the original movie’s timeline in the wake of reboot Leprechaun Origins four years prior. Neither film featured franchise mainstay Warwick Davis in the title role, but here’s hoping he’s someday brought back to reclaim the icon he made famous.

And who knows, maybe Bousman will end up finding himself in the director’s chair…
