1. Hadestown
Hadestown arrived on Broadway in 2019 with a splash. At the 73rd Tony Awards, it netted 14 nominations and won 8—including Best Musical and Best Original Score—establishing it as the production of that season.
A modern adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Hadestown finds Orpheus in a Great Depression-inspired post-apocalypse. From here, he must journey to the Underworld of Hadestown to retrieve his beloved Eurydice from the clutches of Hades.
Hadestown wasn’t only a hit at awards season, but quickly established a massive following thanks in large part to its score of folk, jazz, and delta blues. With music and book both written by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, it’s small wonder that Hadestown became the musical everyone had to see.
2. Hamilton
Before Hadestown set the world on fire, Hamilton started a revolution. When the theater world went dark mid-pandemic, the original cast tried to keep spirits high. Reuniting for a special live-taping on
Disney Plus, the performance quickly became one of the most popular features on any streaming service.
And now in 2020 Lin Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical returns to the road once again.
At one time it was nigh-impossible to get tickets to see Hamilton. But with the new tour announced, tickets are on sale now. You can see here when the show will be coming to a city near you.
3. The Book of Mormon
Comedy and musicals have always gone hand-in-hand, and the much-loved Book of Mormon is one of the most popular examples of the interplay between laughter and lyricism in recent memory.

Lopez of Avenue-Q and Frozen fame, The Book of Mormon tells the tale of the founder of the Church of Latter-Day Saints and his modern-day disciples. And with the talent behind it, it’s every bit as irreverent as you would imagine.
After this long year now-past, we could all use some levity in our lives. And The Book of Mormon delivers all you could ask for and then some.
The Pandemic Will Go and Theatre Performances Will Go on
When COVID-19 forced Broadway and the West-End to go dark, it seemed like a grim portent of things to come. Tours were canceled, and numerous shows were made to close early.
Having arrived in the new year, the theatre is still trying to find its feet in unpredictable times. But we can say with confidence that live theatre performances will persist.
Who knows? This year is young, and we may yet see a major revitalization of the theater as life returns to stages across the world.
