A three-bedroom house is on sale for an appealing £125,000 in Leeds – but the previous owner made one final request, which was to be buried in the garden.
The former owner of a three-bedroom house on sale for £125,000 in Leeds made one final request before his death, to be buried in the back garden of the property he had spent the entirety of his life at, Yorkshire Live reports.
Of course, this has been made clear to any potential buyers so that anyone considering purchasing the house is fully aware of exactly what they’re getting into.
Advertised by estate agents Manning Stainton, the property notes state: “Please be aware this property is being sold by family members as part of a relatives estate.
“It was the deceased’s wishes to be buried in the garden as he was born and died in the house.
“This wish has been carried out and the property will be sold as is.”
Many who have heard that the property is up for sale are comparing it to the ITV drama show, Finding Alice.
In the black comedy, a grieving widow named Alice is keen to have her husband Harry buried in the garden, yet his parents strongly disagree with this decision.
The three-bedroom house in Leeds, which is listed on Rightmove, is listed for £125,000 and has garnered quite a bit interest – but perhaps not for the intention of purchasing the property.
On Twitter, one woman shared a link to the property advertisement and commented: “Have a read of the description of this house…”
While another said: “This sounds delightful. Three bedrooms, pine kitchen, conservatory, dead body in backyard, close to city centre…wait what?”
The end-terrace house features eco-friendly solar panels and the ability to have the house powered by a wood-burning stove. While inside, the house has clearly been well-kept and has a spacious living-room beside an equally spacious kitchen.
As you can see from the Rightmove images, the house is in need of a little work, with floorings needing to be replaced and a lick of paint. Despite this, the property has plenty of potential with its decent sized bedrooms, which are perfect for a growing family.
On the outside of the property, there is a shared driveway, a substantial back garden – which is where the previous owner has been laid to rest – with wooden sheds towards the end.
In England and Wales, there are no laws in place which can prevent people from being buried privately, as long as the landowner approves.
Those interested also don’t need planning permission – yet a person considering this must seek a certificate of authority from the Registrar of Birth & Deaths.
Records of the precise burial spot must be kept and there are some strict requirements in place in regard to location, such as it not being too close to water.
As stated by the National Death Centre, burying on private land is “a relatively straightforward matter, free of many of the restrictions and legal hurdles which might be imagined.”
