SOPHIE, the highly influential avant-garde musician, DJ, and producer, passed away yesterday morning in Athens, Greece following an accidental fall. “Our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident,” a statement from the artist’s label Future Classic read. “True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell.” Artists, peers, and collaborators including Arca, Danny L Harle, FKA twigs, Flying Lotus, Jak Antonoff, FINNEAS, Sam Smith, Iglooghost, Hudson Mohawke, and many more quickly took to social media to mourn and pay tribute to the late musician. Find their remembrances below.
Sophie, the news of your passing feels unreal, and I’m still trying to process the sense of loss. growing alongside you helped me feel less alone throughout the years. I will miss our correspondence very much.

I’m having a hard time finding the words that could speak to what i’m feeling right now…SOPHIE was a great. No one touched music how she did + her impact will be felt forever. Her work and what she embodied was incredibly important and special to me and i know to so many others pic.twitter.com/Qb6qmsnAcT

Losing sophie doesn’t feel real, I found out last night and it still hasn’t really hit. She inspired me and my friends and so many others in ways that no one else could have. I love you sophie

the loss of sophie is huge. she’s been at the forefront for a long time and we see her influence in every corner of music. if you’re not aware of what she has done then today is the day to listen to all her brilliant work. you’ll hear an artist who arrived before everyone else.

there is truly nobody as foundational to the music me or any my friends make than SOPHIE and nothing more inspiring than the distance she was able to bring an approach that was so unapologetically herself, so experimental and boundary shattering, yet complete pop music

I THINK SOMETHING UNREAL WAS BREWING IN HER MIND TOO. THERE WAS GLIMPSES OF IT IN THE HEAV3N MIX & A FEW NEWER PIECES. THIS ACIDIC, HARSH, LONGFORM, RAW FEEL WHERE YOU COULD PRACTICALLY HEAR THE WAVEFORMS SPLITTING & CRACKING. JUST SO GOOD.https://t.co/HkcXTYA0e7

x At this tragic cultural intersection where I’m processing loss of Cicely Tyson, John Chaney and SOPHIE in one sitting. Respect the architects! x

Sophie was a stellar producer, a visionary, a reference. She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman. I can’t believe she is gone. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers. pic.twitter.com/3kyRl1KabY
