In 1978, the American Tolkien Society declared a fabulous holiday: Hobbit Day. Tolkien Week falls around Hobbit Day as well. September 22nd is Hobbit Day because it is the day of Frodo and Bilbo’s mutual birthday, and therefore the day of the Long Awaited Party, in The Fellowship of the Ring. The American Tolkien Society notes that it’s “perhaps the oldest festal observance associated with Tolkien fandom.” The day that inspires our real-life Hobbit Day is a particularly important one in the series because it kicks off the entrance of the Hobbits into the rest of Middle Earth, instead of staying enclosed in the Shire. Bilbo goes off to Rivendell, and Frodo eventually follows on his journey with the Ring.

To celebrate Hobbit Day, you can refer directly to the Fellowship text, book, or movie. Costumes, games, food, drink, and fireworks are always appreciated. However, if you don’t have the time or funds to plan a gigantic, village-wide fête with wizard fireworks, you can show your appreciation for the Hobbits with décor, clothing, and delicious food.
