Synopsis: In this heavy metal queer-romance cursed by black magic and the occult, there’s a coven assisting unhappy wives with murdering their husbands, a stoner turns a pizzeria into a video rental head-shop, and a lost soul falls in love with a serial killer.
From the group over at Blood Sick Productions, our latest review is a film that just wants to grab you by the skull and rattle you until you’re babbling…kind of reminds me of my first marriage, but who’s counting. In “Coven Of The Black Cube”, we lay witness to a SOV presentation that has no apologies for its guerilla-style filmmaking or multiple-personality plot-pathways…and now that I have you all eternally invested, let’s rip into this one. You’d think that by reading the synopsis and all that’s mentioned, you’ll be ready to tap out within the first 30 minutes or so, but the way this presentation is crafted, there’s no need to GPS your way out of this colossal traffic-jam of creative circuitry – just sit back and let it invade your gray matter for the duration. There’s an interior romance at the crux of it all, and the movie uses it as a solid focal point – it’s a little different for a horror movie, per se…but it worked and it was enjoyable – a nice departure from the norm, if you will.
Between all the witchy activity (quite the hostile bunch, actually), pot-headed entrepreneurial ideas, and generic husband/wife discord, the movie rolls along gleefully in its pursuit of, well…madness. The performances are subtle but unhinged, and the visuals are what you’d expect if you watched a movie through a piece of cheesecloth – and if you feel the need to ask the question “what is cheesecloth?” –CONGRATULATIONS, you’re not old. Gore is also more than respectable, especially considering the one scene that’ll be best unsaid…especially for the make readers in the room – OUCH. Overall, “Coven Of The Black Cube” is certain to be adored by only the finest of pin-point genre fans, and that’s cool – this is the kind of stuff that makes being a fan of this category so much fun. If you’re in the mood for stories that’ll have you led across the intersection by a squirrel disguised as a guide dog, then this movie’s for you.
