Publishing has changed a lot in the past 26 years, but one of the genres that has transformed the most is horror. In the 80s and 90s, horror was dominated by straight white cis men readers and authors. As the subtitle suggests, this is told as a series of accounts of a worldwide zombie outbreak, offering glimpses into different countries’ responses to the crisis. The format makes for an absorbing read that can make you forget it’s fiction. It was made into a 2013 movie starring Brad Pitt, but as Max Brooks put it, the only thing the book and movie have in common is the title. Try the full-cast audiobook instead.
