DJ and producer i_o‘s cause of death has been revealed after his sudden passing last November at the age of 30. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s report, i_o, whose real name was Garrett Lockhart, died of natural causes related to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland.
In a statement released to EDM.com, i_o’s family explained that the producer had “sudden and fatal arrhythmia.” They continued: “After five months of testing, the conclusion is that, while Garrett did suffer from depression and anxiety, he did not take his own life. It is our hope that Garrett’s premature death can be used to create and normalise conversations surrounding mental health issues, realising there may be underlying disease of conditions requiring medical attention.”
Over the past few years, i_o released three EPs that comprised an album called 444. He also put out music on labels run by Deadmau5 and Above & Beyond and collaborated with Grimes on the song ‘Violence’, from last year’s Miss Anthropocene.
