What To Know
- Pollster Matt Towery expressed concern on Fox News about low Republican turnout in key states like Georgia.
- Towery, who previously downplayed Trump’s poor poll numbers, now urges Republicans to lay more groundwork.
- He also said Republicans need to better publicize President Trump’s achievements to counter negative media coverage.
A month after putting a positive spin on President Donald Trump‘s cratering poll numbers, pollster Matt Towery has shared a bleaker prognosis for the Republican Party in the upcoming midterms.
Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity on Monday evening (June 1), Towery was asked in which states he thought the GOP might have “pickup opportunities,” including New Hampshire, Michigan, and Georgia.
“Well, right now, I’ll tell you Sean, it is too early for us to say,” he answered, per Mediaite. “I am concerned about one thing, and that is Republican turnout. In Georgia, Democrats turned out 150,000 more early voters than Republicans in the state — the red state — of Georgia. That is not a good sign to me.”
Sen.Jon Ossoff(D-GA) is defending his seat in Georgia, where all 14 congressional districts are up for grabs. The state is currently represented in the House of Representatives by nine Republicans and five Democrats.
Last month, Towery told Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham that Trump’s low poll numbers were not a concern. “The pollsters are wrong, and I’m right,” he said, insisting that the president’s “polling numbers among Republicans are the best they have ever been” and were “at the height.”
A month later, Towery isn’t so bullish, telling Hannity, “more has to be done now to lay the groundwork” if Republicans want to have success in the midterm elections.
“And I’ll also say one other thing. I don’t think enough of President Trump’s achievements are being put out there for the general public to see,” he added. “They see this… this barrage that’s created by the liberal media. They hear nothing but war. The president has achieved phenomenal things, including, by the way, the stock market hitting another record, I think today.”
“But you don’t hear about it,” Towery continued, “and I think Republicans need to start making that case, whether they have to buy ads or whatever, right now, because it’ll be too late in October and November.”
