The Rookies Deric Augustine Teases Miles Major Season 9 Change

WhenThe Rookie returns for Season 9, there will be a major change for Miles (Deric Augustine). He will no longer be a rookie — and it wasn’t an easy road for him to get there. After all, he was nearly kicked out of the LAPD after going rogue in Season 8. His punishment was ultimately adjusted down to a suspension, administrative leave, and an extension for his time as a rookie. But after his actions in the finale, he’s moving up.

“I think he’s going to be thrilled that he’s not a rookie anymore. Especially in Season 8, we see him make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. So, I’m excited about that journey to see how he not relies on his cowboy instincts, but really relies on the teachings of his TOs, the three TOs he had and the intellect he learned from the mistakes that he has fortunately learned from,” Augustine told TV Insider recently. “He’s learning. He’s adapting.”

Miles started out with Tim (Eric Winter) as his training officer, then it was Nolan (Nathan Fillion), and his most recent one was Nyla (Mekia Cox). Looking ahead toThe RookieSeason 9, Augustine would like to return to where that started.

“I love working with Mekia,” he said. “Maybe I want to go back with Tim, honestly. That would be cool. To see him graduate under the teachings of Tim, maybe he comes back as a TO just to see Miles off and to see him be successful. ‘I started with him, I’m finishing him.’ That would be cool. But I love Nyla, too.”

He’s also looking forward to Miles graduating “and to see how he’s going to adapt being a really great police officer in the force, being a P2 and having his independence.”

Of course, this is all coming as Tim and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) have just been kidnapped, immediately following her saying yes to his proposal. It’s going to be all hands on deck to save them when the series returns in the midseason — and that could mean Miles getting tested as a P2 pretty quickly.
