Tony DiNozzo Returns! Michael Weatherly Joins NCIS Season 24 Cast

What To Know

  • Michael Weatherly will reprise his role as Tony DiNozzo in NCIS Season 24.
  • He was last seen in the one-season spinoff,Tony & Ziva, with Cote de Pablo.

The 2026-2027 season is going to be a good one forNCIS fans. Not only is Mark Harmon bringing Leroy Jethro Gibbs back onscreen for the season, appearing in all episodes, in NCIS: Origins Season 3, but now another originalNCIS star is reprising his role, this time on the mothership.

Michael Weatherly will be reprising his fan-favorite role as Tony DiNozzo in what CBS is saying is a “season-long arc reuniting him with the NCIS team” in Season 24. This will be the first time that he plays the role again after his and Cote de Pablo‘s one-season spinoff,NCIS: Tony & Ziva, on Paramount+. CBS has not yet revealed how many episodes he’ll be in or when he’ll first appear.

Weatherly debuted as Tony in the two-episode backdoor pilot onJAG introducingNCIS in 2003. He then was a series regular for the first 13 seasons of NCIS. He returned to the role in Season 21’s “The Stories We Leave Behind,” the series’ tribute to the late David McCallum and his character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. He reunited with McGee (Sean Murray) and Palmer (Brian Dietzen).

Weatherly called that return “truly amazing,” adding, “Ducky would have loved all the smiles!”

Murray told TV Insiderin March 2024, “Having Michael back, I mean, Michael is a lifelong friend. I talk to him all the time. Actually, most of the people that have come through the show I’m very, very close with. But Michael is the guy I’ve been extremely close with and I’ve stayed in touch. We talk at least every month or two. And just knowing that this was going to happen was really cool.”

Tony’s return is coming as the series left off on a major cliffhanger: Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) confronted the teen son McGee just recently learned he had, Mateo (Patrick Keleher), about some suspicious behavior. Both were armed, and the finale ended with a gunshot, but it was unclear who fired. Executive producer Steven D. Binder confirmed to us that “someone was hit.” Not only can’t we wait to see the resolution of that, but now we can’t wait to see Tony’s onscreen reaction to McGee having an 18-year-old son from a relationship he’d been in when the other man was still part of the team.

NCIS Season 24 also stars Murray, Valderrama, Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole. Binder, Chas. Floyd Johnson, Mark Harmon, Scott Williams, Christopher J. Waild, Mark R. Schilz, José Clemente Hernandez, Avery C. Drewe, Marco Schnabel, and Donald P. Bellisario are executive producers.
