Return to Room 217: Behind the Red Curtains of ‘The Shining Opera’ [The Losers’ Club Podcast]

A24 Would Never

For Horror Queers first quarter, we’re exploring “underrated or underseen” films of the 2010s! After spending our January working through 2011-2014 with Scream 4, American Mary, The Lords of Salem and Housebound, we’re kicking off February with…well, February!

At least that’s what Oz Perkins‘ directorial debut was originally known as before it was changed to the more genre-friendly title The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015, released 2017). The film, starring Kiernan Shipka and Emma Roberts, is a moody portrait of grief and dread that features Satanic worship and murder at an all-girls dorm.

In the film, Kat (Shipka) begins behaving erratically when she and older girl Rose (Lucy Boynton) spend the Winter break by themselves at their empty school. Meanwhile Joan (Roberts), a girl with a troubled past, hitches a ride from a couple (James Remar and Lauren Holly) whose motivations aren’t entirely clear. As the film progresses, the truth about the characters’ relationships and what happens/happened at the school is revealed in ways that are both disturbing and incredibly tragic.

Episode 163 – The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) feat. Matt Monagle

Bow down before the furnace because we are talking about Oz Perkins’ 2015 debut film The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Joining us is mega-fan Matt Monagle from Certified Forgotten, who counts this as his #1 horror film.

After Trace takes us through the botched release schedule (with a few jabs at A24 and DirecTV), we dig into this intimate, dread-filled film which features three fantastic female performances and oozes atmosphere.

Plus: Joe’s “dumb dumb” first watch reactions, the tragedy of Rose never realizing she’s in a horror film, Lauren Holly’s one take wonder, more Emma Roberts appreciation, and the lingering effect of those final scenes.

Coming up on Wednesday: Our “underseen or underrated” series continues with Australian coming of age film Boys in the Trees (2016)
