Owain Rhys Davies, a Welsh actor who starred in Twin Peaks: The Return and The OA, has died. He was 44.
The actor’s brother, Rhodri, confirmed the news on Instagram on Sunday (May 31), writing, “It is with profound sadness that my father and I share the news that my brother, Owain, has passed away.”
He continued, “This news will come as a great shock to many. While there are still questions that remain unanswered regarding the circumstances of his death, our understanding at this stage is that Owain passed suddenly, naturally, and peacefully.”
Born on February 20, 1982, in Cardiff, Wales, Davies began his acting career on the stage, performing on London’s West End in the likes of Mamma Mia!,The Wizard of Oz,and By Jeeves. He also worked on productions around the world, including The Lion King, Grease,The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,Under Milk Wood, and more.
On the big screen, Davies appeared in Alice Through The Looking Glass, The Relationtrip, and the critically acclaimed A Serial Killer’s Guide To Life.
However, he was perhaps best known for his TV roles, including Agent Wilson in Twin Peaks: The Return, the 2017 revival of the cult classic 1990s series. Landing a role on the show left a big impression on Davies, who opened up about the experience in a September 2017 Instagram post.
“What a wondrously beautiful thrill ride it was working with this legend,” Davies wrote alongside a photo of himself with the late director David Lynch. “Being welcomed in by the Twin Peaks family of cast and crew was truly an honour and can’t thank them enough for allowing me to be apart of this cinematic masterpiece. If you ever need to call on me you know what to do….WILSON!!!!”
His other TV credits include The OA, The Indian Doctor, My Dead Ex, Tall Tales, Gossip Spy, and more. He most recently worked on the scripted podcast series Impact Winter.
“Owain was fortunate enough to have more than one family. Alongside his biological one, he built extraordinary, family-like bonds with many of his closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones,” his brother wrote on social media. “I am incredibly proud that, while he was my brother, he was also a brother to so many others. We know that this loss will be felt by a great many people, and we take comfort in knowing how loved he was.”
Rhodri promised he will “try and share further information in due course as we learn more and begin making arrangements,” adding, “In the meantime, we kindly ask for some privacy as we come to terms with this devastating loss and support one another through the days ahead.”
